Although the University has a slightly older population than many other employers, we still have a large number of maternity claims, and a few that result in premature deliveries and high claim costs. As a result, it was important to me to be a part of the Learning Network, and to be involved in shaping the employer value statements for maternity and infertility care.

We also had a chance to be included in the discussions with provider groups on the maternity care they are providing. I’ve been impressed with the focus from these groups on eliminating early inductions that aren’t medically necessary and reducing cesarean rates, and the processes and reporting they have in place to assure they reach their goals in this area.

The Maternity Learning Network provides purchasers with up-to-date information on what’s going on with maternity cost and quality issues. It also offers the ability to hear directly from care systems and providers about what they are doing to improve maternity outcomes. And the format allows purchasers to let providers, care systems, and health plans know that we are focused on improving outcomes and managing maternity costs
